I'm Taking The Jump

Next big DIY project here at the Skinner household...
Painting the brick fireplace white!
I've finally convinced hubby, and it will do so much for giving our living room a lighter feel and look.

I found some great tips and instructions for painting a fireplace at Young House Love.

So gorgeous!

Have you ever painted your fireplace? Was it tougher than it sounds, or just as simple as you thought it would be? I'd love to hear any tips and see some before & after photos! xo

Good luck - I can't wait to see how it turns out. I've been toying with painting my fire surround for the last 10 years or so but still haven't got up the nerve!

Years ago when I owned a bungalow, I painted the fireplace white. What a difference it made. It was easy and it looked great! I think you will be very pleased with the results.

You will be fine. We did ours that were covered in brown stain and it was really easy. We used a stone paint for around the fire and gloss white for the surrounds and have never looked back. Just make sure you thin out the first few coats because if the bricks are natural (no product or finishes on) it will drink the paint up. You will need to build up the coats.
Good luck.

I painted mine and I'll be honest, it was a bigger job than anticipated. I primed it twice (alkyd) then did 2 coats of latex. I think it could use a 3rd. My brick has lots of crevices so I used a thick, nappy roller. Good luck! It was a pain to do but what a difference!
